ABOUT US
Capitol City Mattress was started in 1930 by Mr. E. B. Jones and Mr. J. D. Southerland. They had previously worked for several years at Jamison Bedding having decided to leave after being refused a ten cent an hour raise. The first few months of the business consisted of Mr. Jones doing mattress renovations on a house to house basis. When Mr. Southerland joined him, they bought a building on the corner of 9th and Main Street, which is the present site of the company today.
In 1947, Mr. Southerland and Mr. Jones dissolved their partnership. Mr. Jones retained the mattress company at the present site and Mr. Southerland eventually bought Nashville Bedding Company, which is today, Southerland Bedding Co.
Mr. Jones passed away in 1975 and in 1985; the Bass family purchased Capitol City Mattress from Mrs. Jones. The Basses then added the name FLUFFO as their primary brand name with Snuggler and Snooozzzer following later. The Bass family also enlarged the building at 9th and Main several times over the years.
In 1997, the Bass family purchased the Best ‘n Bedding Company in Knoxville, thus adding the America’s Best line of bedding to their brands.
In April of 1998, a tornado destroyed a great deal of the building at 9th and Main Street. It was rebuilt and a new building was added behind the existing building fronting Woodland Street. In January of 2001, the Knoxville plant was consolidated into the new building, bringing all the mattress operations to the Nashville plant.
Capitol City Mattress is still owned and operated by the Bass family.
